Four suspected communist rebels were killed while two others were wounded during an encounter with the government troops in Ilog, Negros Occidental on Tuesday, the Philippine National Police said Wednesday.
In a statement, PNP chief Police General Guillermo Eleazar said some rebels engaged Special Action Force and military operatives in a firefight in Sitio Balik-Balik, Barangay Tabo at about 7:20 a.m.
“The gun battle lasted for 1 hour and 10 minutes, and resulted in the death of the four terrorists,” Eleazar said, citing reports from Special Action Force director Police Brigadier General Felipe Natividad.
“No casualties were reported on government side. The PNP troops also recovered four long firearms,” he added.
According to authorities, the operation was conducted in response to intelligence reports on the presence of the rebels who are recruiting new members in the area.
One of the wounded rebels was identified as Nilda Bertulano, who was allegedly the South West Secretary of the group.
Bertulano, according to the PNP, is the subject of a warrant of arrest issued by Hon. Renato Muñez, Executive Judge of RTC Branch 60 of Cadiz City for the crime of murder.
Eleazar said the wounded rebels will be given appropriate medical treatment, and will be made to face investigation and prosecution upon full recovery.
According to the PNP, the police and military troops are still continuing operations in the area. —Joviland Rita/LBG, GMA News
