90 infra projects in Marawi City to be done before Duterte finishes term, says Del Rosario

Task Force Bangon Marawi chief and Housing Secretary Eduardo del Rosario said Wednesday that 90 infrastructure projects in Marawi City, which was devastated by a five-month-long armed conflict in 2016, will be finished by the time President Rodrigo Duterte’s term ends on June 30, 2022.

“About 30 projects will be completed by December [this year]. By the first quarter and second quarter of next year, another 60 projects in our pipeline will be finished,” Del Rosario said during the Laging Handa briefing.

Del Rosario said that for one, the Department of Public Works and Highways is expecting to finish construction of 200 classrooms by June 30, 2022 while the construction of 2,800 permanent shelters will be done by March 2022.

“By June 30 [next year], there will be 95% completion. The funds for  Marawi rehabilitation are lodged in appropriate agencies for implementation. There is no problem for completion,” Del Rosario pointed out.

“We also have been able to rebuild five mosques and four barangay complexes. The road network will also be done by October. The President (Rodrigo Duterte) paid a visit last October 16 and he has seen these projects we can be proud of,” he added.

Del Rosario, however, conceded that most of the residents in the Islamic City’s most affected area are yet to rebuild their homes since they are still waiting for the passage of the Marawi compensation bill into law.

“So from sectors 1 to 3, since July of last year, we have already allowed them to go back, provided they have a building permit from the local government unit. And then starting this month, October from sectors 4 to 7, we have allowed them to repair or reconstruct their housing units also and you will notice sectors 1 to 7 can already do repairs. The problem is money. They need money to be able to build their home so they are waiting for the approval of the compensation bill,” Del Rosario said.

“Congress will meet so this bill will finally be passed and approved by the President,” he added.

Vice President Leni Robredo, during a visit to Marawi City last week, said the residents were worried if they will be granted remuneration under the compensation bill, given that a lot of them have incomplete documentation of the land they previously occupied before the city was held under siege by Maute terrorists.—AOL, GMA News
