LGUs outside NCR appeal for more COVID-19 vaccine doses

Provincial governors on Friday urged the national government to allocate more COVID-19 vaccine doses for their constituents.

“Ang nakikita po ng mga kasamahan po namin ay talagang dapat na pong dagdagan itong mga binibigay na quantity ng mga bakuna,” League of Provinces of the Philippines president Presbitero Velasco Jr. said at the Laging Handa briefing.

(Our members think that the quantity of vaccines being delivered needs to be increased.)

“Hinihiling po nila na damihan na po ngayon para po naman magkaroon sila o maabot nila iyong population protection,” he added.

(They ask for an increase in allocation so that they would be able to achieve population protection.)

Velasco, the incumbent Marinduque governor, noticed that the deployment of vaccines in the past few months was concentrated in the National Capital Region (NCR), the country’s economic center.

As a result, more than 80% of the 9.8 million eligible population in NCR are now fully vaccinated based on government records. Vaccination rates in the regions, however, remained low.

Earlier, vaccine czar Carlito Galvez Jr. said that finding supplies of COVID-19 vaccines was no longer a problem for the Philippines, with at least 38 million doses stored in warehouses.

Some 25 million Filipinos have been fully vaccinated against the coronavirus as of October 21, according to the government. — VBL, GMA News
