
Senator Panfilo Lacson vowed that he would not declare martial law if he wins in the May 2022 presidential elections.
During a virtual media presser on Thursday, Lacson was asked if he would place the country under military rule as he is known as a disciplinarian.
In response, Lacson said: “Hindi mangyayari ang martial law, ‘yan ang puwedeng itaga sa bato.”
Lacson is the standard bearer of Partido Reporma.
Lacson was the principal sponsor and one of the authors of the controversial Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020, which strengthened the Philippine government’s efforts against the menace of terrorism. This law was questioned and challenged by some groups.
The measure defines terrorism as an act committed by a person within or outside the Philippines who engages in activities intended to cause death or serious bodily injury to any person or endanger’s a person’s life, and to cause extensive damage or destruction to a government or public facility, public place or private property.
Prior to his stint in the Senate, Lacson served as chief of the Philippine National Police from 1999 to 2001 in which he ran not only after lawless elements but also police scalawags. — RSJ, GMA News
