Four rescuers were killed in a flash flood in Barangay Camias in San Miguel, Bulacan, amid the onslaught of Typhoon Karding on Sunday evening, Bulacan Governor Daniel Fernando said Monday.
Interviewed on GMA News’ Unang Balita, Fernando said five personnel of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) were washed away by a flash flood while conducting rescue operations.
“Actually, lima ‘yan, apat na ngayon ang confirmed dead. Mga ano natin yun, team natin sa PDRRMO. Mga empleyado po natin ‘yun,” he said.
(Actually, there were five, four are now confirmed dead. They were part of our team from PDRRMO. They were our employees.)
Fernando said one of the rescuers is still missing.
According to him, the rescuers used a boat after their truck broke down on their way to their mission. Due to a flash flood, a wall collapsed and hit them, he added.
He said assistance will be provided to the family of the deceased rescuers.
Some 2,000 people are staying in evacuation centers as some areas are still flooded in the province, Fernando said.

Two areas — Polillo Islands and the extreme northern portion of Quezon province — were placed under TCWS No. 5 during the height of Karding’s onslaught on Sunday.
PAGASA said based on its latest monitoring, Karding was last spotted at 190 kilometers west of Dagupan City, Pangasinan, packing maximum sustained winds of 140 km/h near the center, gustiness of up to 170 km/h, and central pressure of 970 hPa. —Joviland Rita/KBK, GMA News
