President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Wednesday (PHL time) called for a “fair international system” as he wishes to put a stop to incidents of hate crime against Asians.
Marcos is hoping for a system that will work for the most vulnerable sectors in the society.
“Our work must also focus on ensuring that the international system remains fair not only for all states but more importantly for all peoples. The system must work for the most vulnerable, especially the marginalized, migrants, refugees,” Marcos said in his address during the high level general debate at the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York City.
“The world has witnessed the enduring contribution of migrants in the fight against this pandemic. We still dream of an end to the disturbing incidents of racism, Asian hate, of all prejudice,” he added.
He mentioned that the joint program of the Philippines and the United Nations on human rights is an example of a constructive approach that “puts our people, not our politics, at the center of this work.”
“It provides a model for revitalizing the structures that facilitate solidarity between the United Nations and the sovereign duty-bearer,” Marcos said.
Marcos is the first leader from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) who delivered a statement at the high level general debate, which is a key moment for world leaders to lay out the priorities of their respective administrations.
The UNGA 77 aims to present an opportunity for world leaders “to consider and debate how we can collectively solve the shared problems of our time—and create a more sustainable, more just future for all.”
Aside from his address at the UNGA, Marcos marked his official trip in the US by courting American firms into investing in the Philippines. He also met with the Filipino community in New Jersey.
Marcos also remarked during an economic forum at the New York Stock Exchange that he could not see the Philippines in the future without the US, its long-time ally, as its partner. — BAP, GMA News
