The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) on Saturday said it will install navigational lanterns in four critical lighthouses in the Batanes.
PCG Deputy Commandant for Operations Vice Admiral Rolando Lizor Punzalan Jr. said the navigational lanterns will be installed in the Sabtang, Mahatao, Ivana, and Valanga lighthouses.
The BRP Gabriela Silang (OPV-8301) will install the lanterns, and the Coast Guard held a send-off ceremony for the ship on Saturday morning.
The PCG said these guides for navigation will help ensure the safe passage and entry to ports and harbors of motorbancas and vessels.
Nevertheless, the Coast Guard warned the local fishermen and seafarers about the archipelagic province’s shallow and perilous rocky coasts.
The operation is supervised by the PCG’s Task Force Kaligtasan sa Karagatan (TFKsK) to intensify the enforcement of maritime safety laws, conventions, and treaties.
It will also boost the port state control, aids to navigation, vessel safety, navigational safety, recreational safety, marine casualty investigation, maritime search and rescue, and training.
According to the PCG, the Batanes Islands are scattered across 4,500 square kilometers that include the Luzon Strait and Balintang Channel – sea lanes between the Philippines and the southern parts of Japan, China, Hongkong, and Taiwan.
Last May, the TFKsK also installed five navigational buoys in the Kalayaan Island Group (KIG): in Lawak, Likas, Pag-asa, and Parola Islands. — DVM, GMA Integrated News
