Scores of children hurt in DR Congo school blaze

LUBUMBASHI, DR Congo – Scores of children in southeastern DR Congo were hurt on Monday, many with fractured limbs, after they jumped from the roof of a burning school, local sources said.

The blaze erupted at a Catholic school for girls in the town of Kolwezi shortly after the start of the school day, they said.

“The children had to escape the flames by leaping from the top of the building, which is three meters (10 feet) high,” a witness, Prince Timothe, told AFP by phone.

The fire began in the school’s dormitory area and then spread to its sections for primary and secondary education.

A communications official in the Lualaba provincial government said at least 97 students were hospitalized, including around 30 with fractures, although there were no fatalities. — Agence France-Presse
