
Several higher education institutions on Monday received awards in the inaugural Gawad Edukampyon, which honors colleges and universities for implementing programs for blended learning schemes and community programs during the COVID-19 crisis.
Gawad Edukampyon was launched in January 2021 by the Commission on Higher Education, Rex Education, and the Philippine Business for Social Progress.
At the awards ceremony livestreamed on Facebook, Gawad Edukampyon honored universities and colleges’ COVID-19 pandemic programs in four categories.
The Gawad Edukampyon for Excellence in Flexible and Responsive Management in blended learning was awarded to Philippine Normal University and the University of Santo Tomas, which are both located in Manila.
It LAO recognized PNU’s CHED HiEd Bayanihan and UST’s Cloud Campus which are online learning management systems that helped their students and teachers to shift to blended education amid the pandemic.
UST Rector Fr. Richard G. Ang said they were able to implement online teaching through “careful planning and being constantly forward-looking.”
UST Vice Rector for Academic Affairs Cheryl Peralta also pointed out that the university is open for capacity-building programs to help other educators in adopting the online learning scheme.
Meanwhile, Gordon College and Ateneo Institute for Science and Alternative Learning and Teaching were awarded THE Gawad Edukampyon for Excellence in Flexible Teaching and Learning Innovation for “exemplary active learning approaches that motivated learning even during times of disruption.”
It honored Gordon College’s GC Lamp Learners’ Academic Management Portal and Ateneo’s Learning Professional Certificate Course.
As for the Gawad Edukampyon for Responsive Research and Development, University of the Philippines -Los Baños bagged the award for its research on “Modelling Simulation of Effect of Different Interventions on the spread of SARS-COV-2 virus in the Different Demographic Scales.
UPLB Biomathematics Team Assistant Coordinator Professor Dylan Antonio Talabis said they are committed to training future scientists and mathematicians to become data-driven and evidence-based in research and development.
In the last category, the Gawad Edukampyon for Public Service and Community Engagement was awarded to Cebu Technological University and Ateneo Bulatao Center for their “outstanding outreach projects that helped alleviate COVID-19 challenges in their communities.”
Cebu university’s Amping Cebuano COVID-19 Response Project offered livelihood to displaced communities and donated food and other COVID-19 needs to Cebu residents.
Meanwhile, Ateneo Bulatao Center’s Brief Psychological Program was able to give mental health care services to alleviate distress and give coping strategies to Filipinos.
The Gawad Edukampyon committee’s selection process includes eligibility screening and evaluation of entries and shortlisting, which were conducted from July to September 2021. — BM, GMA News
