Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Benhur Abalos on Wednesday warned against Bureau of Fire Protection personnel selling fire extinguishers to applicants securing a fire safety permit.
At the Kapihan sa Manila Bay forum, Abalos said he will issue a memorandum circular on the matter.
“Kapag may manghihingi sa inyo, magbebenta ng fire extinguisher, sabihin niyo sa akin. Nagpaano na ako ng circular [If BFP personnel try to sell you a fire extinguisher, tell me. I’m already haveing a circular done],” he said.
Talagang tatanggalin ko ang mga ‘yan. Hindi pupuwedeng in exchange for a permit. Meron na akong memorandum. Ire-reiterate ko yan,” he added.
(I will remove them. You should not be selling fire extinguishers in exchange for a permit. I already have a memorandum, I will reiterate that.)
The Philippine National Police’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) on Tuesday arrested two men in Rizal for allegedly pretending to be connected with the BFP to solicit money.
The suspects are facing estafa charges. According to authorities, the two were previously jailed for allegedly using former President Rodrigo Duterte’s name to scam people, but were able to make bail.
Authorities believe they still have an accomplice who instructs them on who to send the solicitation letters. The police reminded the public to verify the details in solicitation letters to prevent scams. — BM, GMA News
