MMDA eyes expanding walkway at EDSA Busway

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is planning to expand the walkway for passengers at the EDSA Busway, its spokesperson Mel Carunungan said on Wednesday.

At a public briefing, Carunungan said MMDA chairperson Carlo Dimayuga III wants passengers to be able to walk “both ways” in the area.

“Yun po ‘yung gusto ng aming chairman na sana mapalawak po ‘yung walkway kasi gusto po niya na from both ways po puwedeng maglakad ‘yung mga tao and hindi sila masyadong siksik po doon,” she said.

(That is what our chairman wants, that hopefully we can expand the walkway because he wants passengers to be able to walk from both ways and they are not crowded there.)

“Baka ilalawak po ‘yung walkway at ile-lessen ang mga base para sa mga bus po (We may expand the walkway and lessen the base for buses),” she added.

Asked about other steps the MMDA would take to improve the EDSA Busway, Carunungan said the agency would like to prioritize the convenience of pedestrians through walkways and footbridges.

The MMDA is also considering setting up comfort rooms in bus stops, she added.

In September, Department of Transportation Undersecretary Mark Steven Pastor said DOTr Secretary Jaime Bautista has ordered a study on the possible privatization of the EDSA Busway.

Pastor added that the privatization of the EDSA Busway needs to be studied because it involves many components such as bus units and infrastructures, which are under the jurisdiction of other agencies.

Earlier, the Management Association of the Philippines called for the total system upgrade and the privatization of the EDSA Busway and Bus Service to improve the commuter experience in Metro Manila. —KG, GMA News
