For Women’s History Month, the GMA Kapuso Foundation gave 200 women in Laguna and Nueva Ecija free pap smear and breast exam in partnership with Homelab Medical and Diagnostic Services.
“Through pap smear, makikita yung mga changes dun sa kwelyo ng matres kung may inflammation and most importantly kung merong changes that may lead to cervical cancer,” said Dr. Janete C. Pawayal, a rural health physician in Bongabon Rural Health Unit 2.
One of the women in Louisiana, Laguna is Elizabeth Ricarte, who makes P200 for making 10-15 native bags or bayongs.
“Wala na po akong asawa. May apo po akong nahingi sakin ng pera pambaon,” Ricarte said.
In Bongabon, Nueva Ecija, female farmers, like Ofhel Mae Acosta, face threats to their livelihood of farming onions, such as the armyworm or lack of cold storage.
“Kasi yung sibuyas nagda-dry yan. Yung balat po na yun pag nastock siya yun yung mag-cacause ng bulok ng sibuyas,” said Acosta.
The GMA Kapuso Foundation also gave the women grocery packs, vitamins, and hygiene kits.
The foundation also plans to have another Women’s Month project in Sogod and Cordova in Cebu this March.
